Shit.
I let out a deep sigh as I filled with disappointment. My stomach dropped as I stared at the screen in front of me. One of my worst fears had come true.
I had wanted to be a doctor my entire life, but now I would have to face the realization that my hard work simply wasn’t good enough. 70’s in chemistry wouldn’t get me into med school. All the other grades were fine, just that damn chemistry course. No matter how hard I studied for it, I just couldn’t seem to pull through.
How would I tell my father? He’d spent so much money putting me into one of the best schools and giving me a living allowance so I wouldn’t have to have a job while I attended classes. What was I going to tell him? I’d be such a disappointment.
I could feel the tears welling up in my eyes as the reality started to sink in. I would never be able to help people in need. I would never save lives. Nothing I ever wanted would come true now.
I would have to face him soon. He would be home any minute to start making supper. I knew that when his voice echoed down the hall to call me to the table, I would have to tell him. He would ask.
For the next hour, I tried to clear my mind and tell myself it wasn’t that bad. I could become something else; I could do good somewhere else.
The clanging of pots and cooking utensils echoed into my quiet room from the kitchen. It signaled that the inevitable was soon to come. The next hour was one of the most difficult hours of my life. I couldn’t stop the tears as they soaked into my pillow.
“Derrick, supper!” I heard my father call.
Fuck.
Wiping the tears from my eyes, I took a look in my mirror. Great. I was red-eyed and puffy-faced. I wouldn’t last a second out there. I tried my best to collect myself before I opened my door and walked down the hallway to the kitchen where my family would be seated.
They were all there, filling their plates eagerly with my dad’s specialty, lasagna. I took my chair on the far side of the table and tried my best to hide my face.
“Are you okay, Derrick?” my mom asked.
“Yeah, I’m fine.” I could feel the tears fighting to escape.
“Are you sure? You know there’s no secrets at the dinner table,” my dad said.
“Yeah… Well, no…” I said. “I can’t get into med school.” The tears of disappointment started rolling down my cheeks. I tried to focus on eating my supper but my trembling lips made it difficult to get food past them.
“Oh. Well, did you try your best?” he asked.
“...Yeah,” I said with a sniffle, wiping the tears from one cheek.
“Then you have nothing to be ashamed of, sweetheart,” my mother chimed in.
I couldn’t really speak any more; my lips were sealed tight as I tried to contain myself.
